(Sweet Pea Shrub) Myrtifolia

The Polygala Myrtifolia, also known as the sweet pea shrub, is an evergreen shrub with small, glossy leaves and a generous display of purple, sweet pea-like flowers. It reaches about 200 cm in height and 100-150 cm in width at maturity, and it arrives at roughly 45 cm tall in a 19 cm pot. Plant 1-2 per square meter in large pots or spacious borders. The long flowering season from spring to autumn attracts bees and other pollinators. It is a lovely choice for a sunny patio, balcony or Mediterranean-style border. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Place the Polygala in a sunny to partly shaded, sheltered spot for the best flowering. It prefers well-draining soil and does not like waterlogged roots. Water regularly during dry spells and keep the soil lightly moist, especially in pots, which dry out much faster. Prune lightly after the main flowering period or in early spring to keep the shape compact and encourage fresh blooms. This plant is not winter hardy, so bring it inside to a bright, frost-free spot or wrap it well before the first frost.
