The Phoenix Canariensis, or Canary Island date palm, is an impressive evergreen palm with a sturdy trunk and a wide crown of finely feathered, glossy green fronds. In the ground it grows over the years to a height of up to 10 m and a width of about 4-6 m, while in a container it stays far more compact. Plant it as a solitary specimen, one per large container or generous spot in the garden, rather than several per square meter. It brings an instant Mediterranean holiday feel to a patio, balcony or garden. This plant arrives in a 21 cm nursery pot and stands about 110 cm tall.
Place the Phoenix Canariensis in a sunny, sheltered position, as it loves plenty of light and warmth. It needs free-draining soil where water cannot collect, and it copes well with short dry spells. Water thoroughly during extended dry periods, especially in a container, where the root ball dries out much faster. Only remove dry or damaged lower fronds and leave the green ones in place. This palm is not reliably hardy, so bring it indoors to a bright, frost-free spot before the first frost, or wrap the trunk and the heart of the crown in horticultural fleece.
