Blue-green, deeply cut fronds with a gently wavy edge: that's the first thing you'll notice about this fern. Look closer and you'll spot the furry, golden-brown rhizomes creeping over the soil like they own the place. Picture it on a bright shelf or sideboard, where the fronds have room to arch out and catch the light. At 45 cm tall it fills a corner with calm, cool colour and doesn't ask for much attention. Give this green friend a spot in your urban jungle and watch it grow at its own relaxed pace.

Give it bright, indirect light, and keep it out of the harsh midday sun, which scorches those soft blue-green fronds. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly once a week, and let the excess drain away, because this fern likes a steady drink but hates soggy feet. Those furry rhizomes on top of the soil are meant to be there, so leave them uncovered and don't bury them. It enjoys a little humidity, so a bathroom or a pebble tray with water suits it well, and it's happiest between 16 and 26°C, away from radiators and draughts. Repot every couple of years into airy potting soil with a handful of perlite or bark, and feed with half-strength plant food in spring and summer only. Brown frond tips usually mean the air is too dry, and the good news is that this green friend is safe around pets.
