Philodendron

(Love tree) Green Wonder

Picture a bright corner of your living room with a lush, glossy green friend standing around 100 centimetres tall in it. That's what this Philodendron brings: big, deep green leaves with a soft shine that catch the light and turn the room into a small jungle. It grows upright and full, so it fills the gap beside the sofa or a bare spot by the window without taking over your floor space. Philodendrons come from the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they climb up under the canopy, which is why this one takes indoor light so calmly. Give it room and a little patience while it unfurls new leaves, and it'll become the calm, leafy anchor of your home.

Give it a bright spot with indirect light, about a metre from a window is ideal, because direct afternoon sun can scorch those glossy leaves. Water when the top 3 to 4 centimetres of soil feel dry, which is usually every week or two, and tip out the saucer afterwards since philodendron roots hate sitting in water. It's happiest at normal room temperature, between 18 and 27 degrees, away from draughty windowsills and radiators. An occasional mist or a wipe with a damp cloth keeps the leaves dust free and shiny. Repot every two years in spring into airy potting soil mixed with a little bark or perlite, going up one pot size. Feed with half-strength plant food every few weeks in spring and summer, and let it rest in winter when growth slows down. Yellow lower leaves usually mean a little too much water, and since it's toxic to cats and dogs, keep it out of nibbling reach.
