Blue Spire is a woody based perennial that throws up straight, white felted stems topped with airy panicles of lavender blue flowers. The finely cut, silver grey foliage is aromatic when you brush past it and earns its place long before the flowers arrive. It forms a loose column of roughly 100-120 cm tall and 60-90 cm wide, so give it room; plant 3 per square metre, or use a single plant as an accent. Flowering runs from midsummer well into autumn and the blue haze of small flowers is constantly busy with bees and butterflies. It is at its best in a hot, dry border, a gravel garden or along a south facing wall or terrace edge.
Full sun, and the hotter and brighter the spot, the better the stems stand up. The soil must drain sharply and the plant is actually happier on poor, sandy or stony ground. Wet winter soil is the one thing that kills it, so mix grit into clay and plant on a slight mound. Once established it is genuinely drought tolerant and rarely needs watering, while a plant in a pot wants a thorough soak every one to two weeks in summer. Leave the stems standing over winter, then cut the plant back hard in early spring to about 15-20 cm above the ground, because it flowers on new wood and goes bare at the base if you skip this. It is hardy in open ground, and the old stems give the crown extra protection through the coldest weeks.
