(Lemon-scented Geranium) Isko Lemon

Rub a leaf between your fingers and you'll get a puff of fresh lemon: that is the party trick of this scented-leaf geranium. It grows to about 60 cm tall and 30-40 cm wide, with softly lobed green leaves and small pink flowers from early summer. Plan on 4-5 per square metre for a lush border, or give one a pot beside the patio door or garden bench, where you'll brush past it all the time. The flowers are modest and not a big draw for bees, so this one is all about the leaves and the scent that lingers on your fingers. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers. Put this green friend where you walk, sit or eat outside, and you'll smell lemon every time you pass.

Give it a spot in full sun: the more light it gets, the more compact it grows and the stronger the lemon scent. Use well-draining soil, because pelargoniums hate wet feet and the roots rot easily. Water when the top few centimetres have dried out and empty the saucer afterwards; in pots it dries out faster than in the border, so check it often in warm spells. Pinch out the tips in spring and snip off faded flowers to keep it bushy, then cut it back by about a third in autumn before it comes indoors. It is not hardy: bring it inside to a bright, frost-free spot (around 5-10 °C) before the first frost, and water only sparingly over winter.
