(Passion Flower) Constance Elli

The Passiflora Constance Elli is a vigorous climber with large, pure white passion flowers that carry a delicate crown of white and soft purple filaments. It climbs by tendrils and reaches about 600 cm in height and 100-150 cm in width at maturity when trained along a wall, fence or trellis. Plant 1 per square meter, or 1 every 1-1.5 metres along a fence, for a lush green screen. The flowers appear from early summer into autumn, are loved by bees and are followed by ornamental orange fruits. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers or fruits.

Plant the Passiflora in a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spot, ideally against a warm south or west facing wall. It likes well-draining, moderately rich soil and dislikes standing water around the roots. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year and when grown in pots, as containers dry out much faster. Prune back last year's shoots by about a third in early spring and tidy up weak stems to encourage plenty of new flowering growth. This variety is winter hardy in most gardens, but a layer of mulch around the base and a fleece wrap for young plants or plants in pots will protect it during severe frost.
