There's a reason people call it the bunny ears cactus. Its flat, velvety-looking green pads grow in pairs, and each one is dotted with tiny golden tufts that look soft but are actually prickly, so admire them with your eyes only. In its native Mexico it grows slowly, pad by pad, and with enough light your green friend will sprout new pairs of ears along the edges. Picture it on a sunny windowsill in your living room or on your desk, soaking up the light all day long. It asks for very little and forgives a lot, which makes it an easy one to welcome into your urban jungle, even if you're often out and about.
Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally a south-facing windowsill with a few hours of direct sun, because too little light makes the pads stretch and turn pale. Water only when the soil has dried out completely, roughly once a month and even less in winter, as this cactus stores water in its pads and shrugs off a dry spell but hates soggy soil. It's happy between 10 and 30 °C and copes well with the dry air in our homes. Plant it in well-draining cactus soil in a pot with a drainage hole, and repot every couple of years once the pot is full, wearing gloves or using folded newspaper to keep the tiny glochids out of your fingers. Feed it with cactus fertiliser once a month in spring and summer, and leave it in peace over winter. Wrinkled pads mean thirst, while soft, yellowing pads mean too much water. Keep it out of reach of curious pets and little hands.
