Plant it in full sun in free-draining soil, it copes with poor ground far better than with wet ground. Water regularly in the first season and during long dry spells. Cut it back hard by about half after the first flush of flowers and a fresh, tidy mound will flower again into autumn. Tidy the old stems away in early spring rather than in autumn, they protect the crown through winter. It is fully hardy and needs no protection.

The Nepeta Walker's Low is the big brother of the catmints, a generous mound of aromatic grey-green foliage smothered in lavender-blue flower spikes. Despite the name it is not low at all: it reaches about 60-75 cm in height and 60-90 cm in width at maturity. Plant 3-4 per square meter for a full, billowing effect. It flowers from June to September and is famously good at the foot of roses, where it hides bare stems and pulls in bees and butterflies all summer. Give it room, it likes to spill over a path edge.
