The Musa Basjoo is the hardy Japanese banana, with huge, paddle-shaped, fresh green leaves that give any garden an instant tropical look. In a good summer it grows quickly and reaches up to about 400 cm in height and 200-300 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per 2-3 square meters, or give a single plant a large pot or a spacious border. It rarely flowers or fruits in our climate, so this plant is all about its lush foliage. Perfect as a statement plant for a patio, a courtyard or a jungle-style border.
Plant the Musa Basjoo in a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spot, because strong wind tears the large leaves. It likes rich, humus-rich soil that drains well. Water generously in summer and never let it dry out completely, especially when grown in a pot, and feed regularly for fast growth. The leaves die back with the first frost, after which you can cut the stem back to about 20-30 cm in spring once new growth appears. The Musa Basjoo is winter hardy, but in the first years we advise wrapping the stem with fleece and covering the base with a thick layer of mulch or leaves to protect the roots.

Everything about Musa
There is nothing that is more tropical than a banana plant! Your home will look like a tropical rainforest with its lush, glossy green leaves. Some varieties even have a beautiful purple pattern on these leaves. However, you should know Banana plants don't produce fruit when kept inside, but they are still excellent houseplants.
The Musa, also known as the Banana plant or the Musa Tropicana, is native to South-East Asia and Australia. Musa belongs to the Musaceae family, and there are just over 60 species of Musa. The most popular indoor Banana plant is Musa Dwarf Cavendish, a small Banana plant that typically grows 0.8-1,2 m tall.
