(Lavender) Angustifolia Munstead

Lavandula angustifolia Munstead is a compact English lavender with narrow, silvery grey-green leaves that stay on the plant all year and short spikes of deep violet-purple flowers. It reaches roughly 30-40 cm in height and 40-50 cm in width once established, so it stays neat at the front of a bed. Plant 5-7 per square metre for full cover, or 6-8 in a single row if you want a low, clipped edging. It flowers through June, July and August, and the scented spikes are covered in bees and butterflies all day. Use it along a sunny path, in a gravel garden or in a terracotta pot on the terrace, where the warmth brings out the scent.

Give Munstead the sunniest, most open spot you have, as it needs full sun to flower well and stay compact. It wants light, free draining soil, preferably sandy or chalky, and it will rot in heavy ground that stays wet in winter, so dig in grit before planting. Once settled it copes with long dry spells, but water it through its first summer and keep an eye on plants in pots, which dry out far faster than open ground. Prune straight after flowering, taking off the spent spikes and about a third of the green growth, and never cut back into the bare old wood because it will not resprout. Give it a second light trim in early spring to keep the bush tight. It is fully hardy in the garden and needs no winter protection.
