(Bay Laurel) Nobilis

The Laurus Nobilis, or bay laurel, is a classic evergreen with glossy, dark green, aromatic leaves and a naturally upright, dense habit. This specimen is supplied at about 150 cm in a 27 cm pot and reaches about 500 cm in height and 200-300 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per square meter as a solitary tree, or about 1 per metre in a row for a formal evergreen screen. It can be clipped into a ball, cone or standard, and the leaves are the same ones you use in the kitchen. A strong choice for patios, entrances, large borders and big containers.

Place the Laurus Nobilis in full sun or half shade, ideally sheltered from cold winds. It needs well-draining soil, because waterlogged roots are the quickest way to lose it. Water regularly in dry spells and keep the soil lightly moist in a pot, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune in late spring or summer, and clip again lightly in early autumn if you want to keep a formal shape. The Laurus Nobilis is not fully winter hardy: before the first frost, move it to a bright, frost-free spot or wrap the pot and crown well in fleece.
