Common jasmine is a vigorous twining climber with slender green stems and fresh, pinnate leaves made up of pointed leaflets. From summer into early autumn it produces clusters of small white star shaped flowers that open from pink tinged buds, and the scent carries a long way on a warm evening. Given wires or a trellis to climb, it reaches 4-6 m in time and spreads 1-2 m wide, so allow one plant per 1-2 square metres of wall, or grow it in a large pot with an obelisk. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers, especially in the late afternoon. It is at its best on a sunny house wall, over a pergola or beside a seating area where you catch the perfume.
Give it a warm, sunny and preferably sheltered position; it flowers most freely with plenty of direct light. Plant it in fertile, well drained soil improved with compost, and avoid ground that stays cold and wet through winter. Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season and water thoroughly in dry spells, remembering that a plant in a pot dries out several times faster and may need water daily in summer. Prune straight after flowering: take out the oldest and most tangled shoots at the base and shorten the rest to keep the plant inside its support, because pruning in spring removes the flowers to come. It is hardy in open ground in most gardens, though a mulch over the roots and a spot out of cold wind helps a young plant through its first winters.
