(Holly) Jenny (pyramide)

The Ilex Jenny (pyramide) is an evergreen holly trained into a neat pyramid shape, with small, glossy, dark green leaves that keep the garden looking tidy all year round. It reaches about 150 cm in height and 60-80 cm in width at maturity. Plant it as a solitary accent, or 1-2 per square meter in large pots or spacious borders. Its dense, formal habit makes it a natural choice for entrances, patios and both modern and classic gardens, and a pair on either side of a front door looks great. Because it stays green, it brings structure and colour through the winter too.

Plant the Ilex in sun or partial shade, in a spot that is sheltered from harsh, drying winds. It prefers fertile, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist, so mix in some compost when planting and avoid waterlogged ground. Water regularly during dry spells, and more often when it grows in a pot or container, as these dry out much faster. Trim lightly in late spring or early summer to keep the pyramid shape crisp, and again in late summer if needed. The plant is fully hardy, but in a container it helps to wrap the pot or move it against a wall during hard frost to protect the roots.
