(Japanese Holly) Crenata Jenny Ball

The Ilex Crenata Jenny Ball is a compact, evergreen Japanese holly with small, glossy dark green leaves and a naturally dense, rounded habit. It reaches about 150 cm in height and 70-100 cm in width at maturity. Plant 2-3 per square meter for a dense, evergreen border. It stays green all year round and takes clipping so well that it is ideal for low hedges, topiary shapes and structure in the border. It looks just as good in a large pot on the patio or balcony.

Plant the Ilex in sun or partial shade for a dense, compact habit. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist and does not tolerate waterlogging. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in pots, as container plants dry out much faster. Trim lightly in spring and again in late summer to keep the shape tidy, as it responds well to pruning. The Ilex is hardy and stays outside all winter, although plants in pots benefit from a sheltered spot in severe frost.
