(Ivy) Helix Variegated

Cream-edged leaves around a grey-green heart, each one shaped like a tiny pointed hand: that's what makes this variegated ivy so easy to spot. It starts out compact in its 6 cm pot, but give it a few months and the stems begin to trail, so picture it spilling over a bookshelf or curling up a little trellis next to your window. Hedera helix is native to Europe, where it scrambles up trees and old stone walls, which is why it feels so at home in a cool, bright room. Put it where the light is good and the pale edges stay crisp. Every new shoot reaches a bit further than the last, so this green friend deserves a spot in your urban jungle where you can watch it explore.

Give it bright, indirect light, because the creamy edges stay crisp there and fade towards green in deep shade. Water when the top 2 cm of soil feels dry and keep it lightly moist rather than soggy, since ivy roots hate wet feet. It's happiest in a cool room between 12 and 24°C, away from the radiator, as dry, warm air invites spider mites. Pot it in airy potting soil and repot once a year in spring, as soon as roots peek out of the drainage holes. Feed with diluted houseplant food every few weeks from spring till autumn. Snip the tips now and then and your ivy will grow bushier. Keep it out of reach of curious pets, as ivy leaves can upset their tummies.
