There's a reason people call it the fairy washboard. Thick, dark green leaves spiral into a tidy rosette, each one banded with pale, raised ridges that look almost sculpted. Picture it on a bright windowsill or at the edge of your desk, where it quietly does its thing and asks very little in return. In its native South Africa this green friend tucks itself between rocks, so those chunky leaves store water and forgive the odd forgotten watering. Give it a few seasons and small offsets will pop up around its base, which makes it a lovely one to share with someone else in our community.
Bright, indirect light keeps the rosette compact and deep green, so a spot near an east or north-facing window suits it well. Strong midday sun can scorch the leaves and turn them reddish brown, which is its way of saying it's had enough. Water thoroughly, then let the soil dry out completely before the next drink, roughly every two to three weeks in summer and even less in winter, because those fat leaves already hold a reserve. Pour at the edge of the pot rather than into the centre of the rosette, as water that sits there can cause rot. Normal room temperature is perfect and it doesn't need extra humidity, just keep it above 10°C. Use airy cactus or succulent soil, repot only when the pot feels crowded and give it a little diluted feed in spring and summer. Soft, mushy leaves usually mean too much water, wrinkled ones ask for a drink, and pet owners can relax because it's non-toxic.
