Crisp white bands across dark green, pointed leaves: it's easy to see why this Haworthia is nicknamed the zebra plant. The leaves form a tidy rosette that feels firm and slightly bumpy under your fingertip, because the stripes sit on the underside as tiny pearly ridges. Picture it on a bright windowsill or desk, where its sculptural shape brings a calm, graphic touch. Haworthias grow on the dry, rocky slopes of South Africa, so this green friend stores water in its thick leaves and doesn't mind if you forget it for a week or two. In a 6 cm pot it fits almost anywhere in your urban jungle, and over time it will slowly push out a few little offsets.
Give it lots of bright, indirect light, like a windowsill with a little morning sun, because strong midday rays can scorch the leaves. Water it thoroughly every other week in spring and summer and let the soil dry out completely in between, since the thick leaves already hold a reserve. In winter it needs even less, roughly once a month, and normal room temperature suits it well as long as it stays above 10°C. Plant it in free-draining cactus or succulent soil and repot every two years or so, when the rosette fills the pot. Feed it with a diluted cactus fertiliser once a month in spring and summer, and skip it in winter. If the leaves turn soft and see-through, it has had too much water, so ease off a little. Good to know: it's safe for cats and dogs.
