(Creeping Baby's Breath) Repens Alba

Picture a cushion of fine, blue-green leaves disappearing under a froth of tiny white flowers in summer: that is creeping baby's breath doing its thing. It stays low, reaching about 15 cm tall and 30-40 cm wide, so give it some room to spill over a wall, a gravel bed or the edge of a border. For a soft white carpet, plan on 6-8 per square metre. Bees and butterflies love the airy blooms from early to late summer, and because it is hardy, this green friend comes back every year. It is just as happy in a rock garden as in a shallow pot on the patio. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives in flower.

Give it a sunny spot with well-drained soil, because it really dislikes wet feet. It comes from mountain regions, so poor, stony or slightly chalky soil suits it fine. Let the soil dry out a little between drinks, and water during long dry spells, more often in pots, which dry out faster. After flowering, trim it back by about a third: it stays compact and often flowers a second time. It is fully hardy and needs no winter wrap, just make sure the soil in a pot does not sit soaking wet through winter.
