(Blanket Flower) Arizona Sun

Gaillardia 'Arizona Sun' produces a long run of daisy flowers in deep brick red with a bright yellow rim and a domed red brown centre, over low, grey green foliage. It is a compact form, only about 20-30 cm tall and 30-40 cm wide, so it sits at the very front of a planting. Plant 7-9 per square metre to close the gaps, or use single plants along a path edge. It starts flowering in June and keeps going until the first frosts if you keep deadheading, drawing bees and butterflies right through the season. It is at home in a hot, dry border, a gravel garden, a raised bed or a sunny balcony pot.

Full sun is essential; in shade the plant stretches, flops and flowers poorly. It needs sharply drained, rather poor soil, so skip the fertiliser and mix grit through heavy ground before planting. Once established it is genuinely drought tolerant and only wants water in extended dry weather, though a plant in a pot has a small root run and will need watering regularly in summer. Snap or snip off spent flowers every week or two to keep new buds forming, and cut the whole plant back to a low tuft in early spring. It is hardy, but wet winter soil shortens its life more than frost does, so drainage is the thing to get right.
