Three ribbed stems rise like a green candelabra, marbled with pale veins and lined with tiny spines: it looks like a cactus, but it isn't one. Euphorbia trigona, also known as the African milk tree, grows tall and upright, and in spring and summer small glossy leaves sprout along the ridges of its stems. Picture it in a bright corner of your living room, where it adds height and a touch of sculpture without taking up much floor space. At around 55 cm in a 17 cm pot, this green friend is easy to love and perfectly happy to be left alone for a while. Give it a sunny spot in your urban jungle and it will happily reach for the ceiling.
Give it a spot with lots of bright light and a few hours of gentle sun, and the stems will stay sturdy and keep their marbling crisp. Water it thoroughly every other week in spring and summer, then let the soil dry out completely before the next drink, because those fleshy stems store water and don't like wet feet. In winter, a small sip about once a month is plenty. Normal room temperature suits it well as long as it stays above 12 degrees, and it doesn't need extra humidity, but cold draughts are a no. Repot it every two years in well draining cactus soil, and feed it about once a month in spring and summer. Take care when pruning or if a stem breaks: the white milky sap can irritate your skin and eyes and is toxic to pets, so wear gloves and keep it out of reach of curious paws.

Everything about Euphorbia
The botanical name Euphorbia is named after Euphorbos, a famous Greek physician. Euphorbos wrote that one of the cactus-like Euphorbia (now called Euphorbia Obtusifolia) was used as a powerful laxative. In 1753, the botanist Carl Linnaeus first described the entire genus and gave it the name Euphorbia.
Euphorbias are great houseplants. They're not too picky, so they're perfect for both beginners and experienced plant parents. The only thing you need to remember is to put them in a bright spot. So why not give Euphorbia a try?
