Glossy green leaves splashed with golden yellow: that's the first thing you'll notice about this pothos. In the rainforests of Southeast Asia it scrambles up tree trunks, so at home it's just as happy trailing over the edge of a shelf as climbing a moss pole, and its leaves grow bigger the higher it climbs. Picture a bright bookcase with long vines spilling down, catching the morning light. It's a quick, forgiving green friend that earns its spot in your urban jungle without asking for much. Give it a sunny corner and you'll soon be spotting new golden leaves unfurling.
Bright, indirect light brings out the golden colours best, and in a dim corner the variegation slowly fades to plain green. Water roughly every other week, once the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, because pothos hates sitting in soggy soil. Normal room humidity is fine, and anything between 15 and 28°C keeps it content, as long as it stays out of cold draughts. Repot every two years into airy potting soil, in a pot just one size up, so the roots have room without drowning. Give it a diluted plant food once a month in spring and summer, and let it rest over winter. Pothos is toxic to cats and dogs if they nibble on it, so hang it or place it out of reach. Brown leaf tips mean the air or soil is a bit too dry, and yellow leaves usually mean too much water, so adjust and it will bounce back.
