Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus' carries large daisy flowers with broad, carmine pink petals that stay almost horizontal instead of drooping, set around a domed orange brown cone. It grows to about 80-100 cm tall and 45-50 cm wide on stiff stems that stand up without staking. Plant 4-5 per square metre, ideally in groups of three or five so the flowers read as a block. Flowering runs from July to September and the blooms are covered in bees and butterflies, while the seed cones feed goldfinches through the autumn. It is made for a sunny border or prairie planting alongside grasses, and it holds up well in a big terrace pot with free drainage.
Plant it in full sun, where at least six hours of direct light keeps the stems upright and the flowering heavy. Ordinary garden soil is fine as long as it is well drained and not too rich; heavy, wet clay in winter is the main reason plants fail. Water regularly through the first summer while the roots go down, then only in long dry spells, and remember that a plant in a pot dries out several times faster. Deadhead through summer to keep new buds coming, then leave the last cones standing over winter and cut the stems back to about 10 cm in early spring. It is fully hardy in open ground; the one thing it will not tolerate is standing water around the crown in winter.
