Thick, pointed leaves in olive green, speckled with chocolate brown and a touch of red at the tips: this little rosette looks like a tiny, patterned artichoke. In Mexico it grows on rocky slopes, which explains the plump leaves that store water for dry spells. Picture it on a sunny windowsill or your desk, catching the light all day and slowly growing into a tidy cluster. It's a green friend that asks for little as long as the light is good, and it finds a spot even on the fullest shelf in your urban jungle. Give it plenty of sun and you'll notice the markings getting richer.
Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally a south or west facing window with a few hours of direct sun. Let the soil dry out completely before watering, which in practice means every two to four weeks, and less in winter. Water the soil rather than the rosette, because droplets caught between the leaves can cause rot. It's happy with normal room temperatures and dry air, as long as it stays above 10°C. Plant it in well draining cactus soil with a little extra perlite, and repot every two years into a pot just one size up. Feed it every month or so in spring and summer with cactus fertiliser, and skip it in winter. If the rosette starts to stretch, it's asking for more light; if the lower leaves turn soft and glassy, ease off the water.
