Digitalis purpurea Gloxiniiflora is a tall foxglove with wide, open bell flowers in pink, purple, cream and white, each throat heavily speckled inside. It is biennial, so it makes a low rosette of soft, felted leaves in the first year and sends up its flower spike in the second. In flower it stands about 100-140 cm tall and 40-50 cm wide. Plant 5-7 per square metre in loose drifts so the spikes rise at different heights. It flowers from late spring into summer and bumblebees crawl right inside the bells. It is made for the edge of a shrub border, a shady corner or a natural planting, and all parts of the plant are poisonous if eaten, so keep that in mind around children and pets.
Give it partial shade or a spot with gentle sun, it dislikes hot, dry positions in full midday sun. It grows best in humus rich soil that stays lightly moist, so add leaf mould or compost before planting. Water during dry spells, especially while the rosettes are settling in, and check pots often because they dry out far faster than open soil. Cut the main spike once it has finished and side spikes usually follow, or leave a few to ripen if you want the plant to seed itself and carry on year after year. Wear gloves when you cut it back, as the sap can irritate the skin. It is fully hardy over winter, the rosette simply sits tight at ground level until spring.
