Digitalis 'Dalmatian White' sends up straight spires hung with pure white tubular bells, lightly freckled inside the throat, above a rosette of soft, veined green leaves. It reaches around 60-75 cm tall and 30-40 cm wide, and unlike older foxgloves this strain flowers in its first year from a young plant. Plant 5-7 per square metre and repeat the groups so the spires read as vertical accents rather than single stems. Flowering runs from late spring into midsummer, roughly May to July, and bumblebees disappear headfirst into the bells all day. It looks right at the back of a shady border, along a hedge or in a woodland edge, and all parts of the plant are toxic if eaten, so choose the spot carefully where children or pets play.
Plant it in partial shade or in sun, though in a hot, open spot the flowering season is shorter. It wants soil that stays lightly moist and holds humus, well drained rather than soggy, so dig in compost or leaf mould on thin or sandy ground. Water in dry spells while the rosettes are building and again as the spires rise; a plant in a pot dries out much faster and will wilt within a day in summer heat. Cut the main spike off just above the leaves once the top bells fade and a second flush of side spikes usually follows, or leave one stem to ripen and self seed. It is hardy and needs no cover, but it is short lived, so letting a few seedlings appear keeps the display going year after year.
