Deep green leaves splashed with creamy white speckles, each one a little different from the last. That's the charm of this compact Dieffenbachia, a green friend that grows upright and unfurls new leaves from the centre of the stem. Picture it on a bright shelf in your living room or on your desk, where the pattern catches the daylight and lifts the whole corner. In the rainforests of Central and South America it grows beneath taller trees, which is why it's happiest in bright, filtered light indoors. As a baby it's small and easy to place, and over the months it will grow into a proper statement piece. Give it a spot in your urban jungle and watch the leaves fill in.
Give it bright, indirect light and the creamy speckles stay crisp, while in deep shade the leaves turn greener and growth slows down. Water when the top 2 to 3 centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly once a week, and tip out any water left in the saucer, because soggy roots are the one thing it really dislikes. It's happiest between 18 and 26 degrees with a little humidity, so keep it away from draughty windowsills and radiators. Repot into fresh, airy potting soil every two years, or sooner if roots peek out of the pot, and choose a pot only one size up. Feed every few weeks in spring and summer with diluted plant food, and let it rest in winter. Good to know: the sap can irritate skin and mouth, so wear gloves when you prune and keep it out of reach of curious pets and children. Yellowing lower leaves usually mean too much water, so ease off a little.
