(Never Never plant) Golden Mosaic

Broad leaves painted with irregular splashes of lime and cream across a deep green base, no two the same, which is exactly how Golden Mosaic earned its name. Underneath, every leaf carries a soft burgundy flush that shows itself in the evening when the plant folds its leaves upward for the night. As a baby the pattern is already fully formed, so you get the whole effect in miniature. It is a Marantaceae like Calathea and Maranta, which means it likes humidity and hates dry radiator air. A striking little green friend for anyone who likes a plant with a daily routine.

Your Ctenanthe wants bright shade and no direct sun, which would bleach the lime and cream markings. Water weekly and keep the soil evenly damp without letting it get waterlogged, checking the top centimetre before each round. Use filtered water or rainwater if your tap water is hard, because minerals leave brown crispy edges on Marantaceae leaves. It needs decent humidity, so a bathroom, a humidifier or a close group of plants makes a real difference to how it grows. Repot once a year in spring into a light mix with perlite and feed monthly through spring and summer. Curling or crisping leaves are almost always a humidity signal, so check the air before you reach for the watering can.
