Clematis The President is a large flowered climber carrying single blooms of 15-18 cm across, rich violet purple with a silvery sheen on the reverse and a boss of reddish purple anthers at the centre. The mid green leaves are divided into three leaflets and the plant climbs by twisting its leaf stalks around whatever it can reach. It grows 2-3 m tall and about 1 m wide, so one plant covers a trellis panel or an obelisk comfortably. Plant one per m2 and give it a support from the start, since the young stems are brittle. The main flush comes in late spring and early summer, with a lighter second flush in late summer, and bees visit the open flowers readily. It suits a wall, fence, pergola or large container on a terrace, and the flowers face outwards, so plant it where you walk past.
Plant it in full sun or partial shade, with the top growth in light and the base of the plant shaded by a low shrub, a paving slab or a mulch, because the roots want to stay cool. Set it in deep, fertile soil that stays lightly moist and drains well; plant the crown about 5-8 cm below soil level so the plant can reshoot if clematis wilt strikes. Water thoroughly in dry spells, especially in the first two seasons, and remember that a plant in a pot dries out far faster than one in open ground. Prune lightly in late winter, in February or March: cut each stem back to the highest pair of fat healthy buds and remove anything dead or tangled, but do not cut it hard to the ground or you lose the early flowers. The President is fully hardy in the garden and needs no winter protection, though a mulch of compost in spring pays off in flower count.
