(Clematis) Nelly Moser

Nelly Moser is a large flowered clematis with pale pink blooms of 15-20 cm across, each petal marked with a deeper carmine bar down the middle. The main flush comes in May and June on last year's stems, followed by a lighter second flowering in late summer. It climbs to about 2-3 m with a spread of roughly 1 m, so one plant per trellis, obelisk or section of fence is plenty. Bees find their way into the open flowers, and the blooms face outwards so you see them properly from a seat or a window. It is a good choice for a shaded wall, a north or east facing fence, or a large pot with a support.

Partial shade suits it best, because the pink flowers bleach quickly in strong midday sun. Plant it in deep, fertile soil that drains well and keep the root area cool by shading it with a low plant, a tile or a mulch of bark. Water generously in dry weather, as clematis are thirsty plants, and check pots every day or two in summer since they dry out far more quickly than open ground. Prune lightly in late February or March: take out dead and weak stems and shorten the rest to a strong pair of buds, but never cut the whole plant to the ground or you lose the early flowers. It is fully hardy, and a mulch in autumn is all the winter care it needs.
