(Clematis) Hagley Hybrid

The Clematis Hagley Hybrid is a graceful climber with large, star-shaped flowers in soft mauve-pink with dark stamens. It climbs to about 250 cm in height and reaches about 60-90 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1-2 per metre of fence, trellis or obelisk for a full wall of colour. It flowers generously from June to September, which keeps the garden colourful for months. It works well against a wall, on a patio in a large pot or in a small garden. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Clematis in a sunny to semi-shaded position, ideally with the roots in cool shade and the flowers in the sun. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays slightly moist but never waterlogged. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in a pot, as containers dry out much faster. Give it a trellis, wires or netting to climb on and tie in young shoots in spring. Prune lightly in late winter to early spring by removing dead and weak stems and shortening the rest above a pair of strong buds. This variety is hardy and can stay outside all winter.
