(Clematis) Avalanche

The Clematis Avalanche is an evergreen climber with glossy, dark green leaves and masses of fragrant, pure white flowers in early spring. It reaches about 400 cm in height and 150-200 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per 1-2 metres of fence, wall or trellis for a dense, green screen. The early blooms are a welcome source of food for bees when little else is flowering. It is a great choice for fences, pergolas, walls and large containers. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Clematis in a sunny to semi-shaded spot, sheltered from cold winds, with its roots in cool shade. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in pots, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune lightly right after flowering to keep the plant in shape, and avoid hard pruning later in the year. The Clematis is hardy, but in a severe frost a layer of mulch around the base and a fleece wrap on the young shoots will protect it.
