Leaves shaped like the tail of a fish, with wedge-shaped, ragged edges that look as if someone snipped them by hand: that's the detail you'll spot first. The glossy, arching fronds of this Caryota mitis fan out from several stems, so a 27 cm pot already gives you a full, feathery crown at 140 cm tall. In the wild it grows in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, which explains why it loves a bright, warm room. Picture it next to a big window in your living room, where the light plays through the fronds and throws soft, moving shadows on the wall. It's a green friend that fills a corner without feeling heavy, and it deserves a spot in your urban jungle. Give it room to stretch and you'll watch a new frond unfurl every now and then.
Give it a bright spot with plenty of indirect light. A little gentle morning sun suits it too, but harsh midday rays can scorch the fronds. Water roughly once a week, as soon as the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, because this palm likes steady moisture but hates standing in water. Caryota comes from warm, humid forests, so it's happiest between 16 and 28 °C, away from draughts and radiators, with a light mist now and then when the air is dry. Brown frond tips usually mean dry air or a gap between waterings that was a bit too long, so no need to panic, just nudge your routine. Repot into fresh, airy potting soil every two years, once the roots fill the pot, and feed it every few weeks in spring and summer. Good to know: the berries and sap can irritate skin and are toxic to pets, so keep curious noses away.

Everything about Caryota
When we want a tropical landscape, vacation feelings and a white sand beach atmosphere, palms are the first thing that comes to mind! We mostly hear about Areca palm… but have you ever heard about Caryota palm? It's also known as the Fishtail Palm because its leaves resemble Fishtails. How cool is that?
Fishtail Palms are from warm and humid forests in Asia and northern Australia. They can grow super tall in the wild, up to 12 meters. But don't worry, as a houseplant, they're way shorter, reaching about 2 meters.
