(Trumpet Vine) Radicans Galen

The Campsis Radicans Galen is a vigorous climber with glossy, feathered leaves and large, trumpet-shaped flowers in warm orange-red. It climbs by itself with aerial roots and reaches about 800 cm in height at maturity, spreading roughly 300-400 cm wide along a wall, fence or pergola. Plant one for every 2-3 metres of wall or fence; a single plant is enough for a pergola post. The flowers appear from midsummer into early autumn and are loved by bees and other pollinators. It turns a bare facade or garden fence into a hot-coloured feature. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Campsis in a sunny, sheltered spot; the more sun it gets, the better it flowers. It grows in any well-draining garden soil and dislikes permanently wet roots. Water regularly in the first years and during extended dry spells, and remember that plants in containers dry out much faster. Give it a sturdy support such as a trellis or wires, and keep it away from poor masonry and wooden gutters because the aerial roots grip hard. Prune back firmly in late winter or early spring to 2-3 buds per side shoot, since it flowers on new growth. It is hardy, although a young plant benefits from a layer of mulch around its base during the first winters.
