Campsis

(Trumpet Vine) Flava Golden Trumpet

The Campsis Flava Golden Trumpet is a vigorous climber with large, trumpet-shaped flowers in a warm golden yellow. It reaches about 800 cm in height and 300-400 cm in width at maturity, clinging to walls, fences and pergolas with its aerial roots. Plant 1 per 2-3 metres of wall or fence, or 1 per large container with a sturdy support. The flowers appear from mid summer into autumn and are loved by bees and other pollinators. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Campsis in a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally against a warm south or west facing wall. It prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil and tolerates short dry periods once established. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first years and when grown in a container, as pots dry out much faster. Prune hard in late winter or early spring, back to 2-3 buds per side shoot, because it flowers on new growth. This plant is fully winter hardy, but a layer of mulch around the roots helps young plants through severe frost.
