(Bottlebrush) Splendens

The Callistemon Splendens, also known as bottlebrush, is an evergreen shrub with narrow, leathery leaves and striking crimson-red flower brushes that look like little bottle cleaners. At maturity it reaches about 300 cm in height and 150-200 cm in width. Plant 1 per 2 square meters in a spacious border, or keep it in a large container as a statement plant. The flowers appear mainly from late spring to summer and are loved by bees and other pollinators. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Give the Callistemon a sunny, sheltered spot for the best flowering. It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil that is low in lime. Water regularly in dry spells and never let the root ball dry out completely, especially in a pot, where it dries out much faster. Prune lightly right after flowering to keep a compact shape, and avoid cutting back into old wood. This plant is not fully hardy: bring it into a bright, frost-free place (about 5-10°C) or wrap it well before the first frost.
