(Prayer plant) Stella

Meet Calathea Stella, the one that looks like someone took a brush of white paint to every single leaf. Each long, deep green leaf carries its own creamy white stroke along the centre, so no two are ever quite the same. She's a sport of the famous White Fusion, but a lot more easy-going, which makes her a lovely step up if you've been eyeing the fancier Calatheas for a while. In this XL size she already stands around 50 cm tall and fills a bright corner of your living room or bedroom with ease. Watch her in the evening, when she folds her leaves up like hands in prayer and opens them again with the morning light. She's safe for curious cats and dogs too, so the whole household can enjoy this green friend.

Give your Calathea Stella a bright spot out of direct sun, as harsh rays will scorch the white parts of the leaves first. Keep the soil lightly moist and water about once a week, as soon as the top 2 to 3 cm feels dry, and never let her sit in a puddle. She prefers rainwater or filtered water, because hard tap water is usually what causes those brown, crispy leaf edges. Aim for a room between 18 and 26 °C with humidity above 60%, and keep her away from draughty windowsills and radiators. Plant her in an airy mix of potting soil with a little perlite and repot every two years in spring. Feed every two weeks with a diluted plant food during spring and summer, then let her rest in winter. Curling leaves are her way of telling you she's thirsty, so check the soil and she'll usually unfurl within a day.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
