The leaf pattern on this Calathea looks painted rather than grown, with a broad silver band sweeping down the centre of every dark green leaf and a matching silver edge tracing the rim. Turn a leaf over and you find a deep purple underside that shows itself every evening, when the whole plant lifts its leaves upward for the night. At this size the leaves are large and the silver really carries across a room. It is one of the more demanding prayer plants, so it repays a bit of attention with genuinely spectacular foliage. A green friend for people who enjoy the ritual of plant care.

Your Calathea wants bright shade with absolutely no direct sun, which fades the silver and burns holes in the pattern. Water weekly and keep the soil consistently damp but never waterlogged, checking with a finger before every round. Use filtered or rainwater if your tap water is hard, because Calatheas react to minerals with brown crispy edges more than almost any other houseplant. High humidity is not optional here, so a bathroom, a humidifier or a tight group of plants makes the difference between surviving and thriving. Repot once a year in spring into a light mix with perlite and feed monthly through spring and summer. Curling leaves mean it is too dry, either in the pot or in the air, and it will unfurl again once you fix it.
