The Calathea Ornata, often called the pinstripe plant, is exactly the kind of green friend you want when you've got space to fill and a love for detail. Her glossy dark green leaves are striped with the most precise pink (sometimes whitish) brushlines, as if hand-drawn with a fine pen. At XL she carries herself with real poise, perfect for a shaded reading corner, a bedroom or a hallway with bright but diffused light. The pinstripes can fade to cream as leaves age, which only adds to her charm. Sophisticated, bold, and utterly recognisable.
Give your Calathea bright but indirect light, never direct sun, which scorches those delicate leaves. Water when the top centimetre of soil feels dry, ideally with filtered water or rainwater, as hard tap water can brown the leaf tips. She loves humidity, so a bathroom, kitchen, or a misting routine will keep her happiest, with temperatures between 18, 26°C. Repot every two years into a well-draining mix of potting soil and perlite. Feed gently in spring and summer only. If you spot crispy edges, she's telling you to raise the humidity or switch to softer water, she's chatty like that.
