Calathea oppenheimiana, also known as Calathea ''Zebra Plant''. Originally from South America, she is known for her striking, dark green leaves with elongated white or yellow patterns, resembling the stripes of a zebra. Besides the beautiful patterns, the leaves of the Oppenheimiana also have a beautiful deep red colour on the back of the leaves. She will also 'close' her leaves at night to open again in the morning. The Calathea is therefore also called the living plant.
Calathea oppenheimiana is a relatively easy to care for plant. She prefers low to bright indirect light. Keep her soil constantly moist, but not drenched. Let the top 3 centimetres of soil dry out before watering again. High humidity is also important, so you might consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray with pebbles filled with water to increase the humidity around the plant. Feed your Calathea Oppenheimiana once a month during the growing season. In this way, your Calathea Oppenheimiana should thrive as a beautiful and attractive houseplant.
Beautifull and vert Big size plant. Thank you
Oh my! The Calathea Oppenheimiana is such a gorgeous plant. I’d give it 4.5 stars, but unfortunately, there’s no option for half stars. Why the deduction? PLNTS.COM lists it as easy to care for, but I quickly discovered that Calatheas are quite dramatic and demand considerable care. It’s definitely not the best choice for beginners. So, here are some tips to help this beauty survive and thrive: • It requires high humidity, around 50-60%. If your home doesn’t have that level, you’ll need a dedicated humidifier. • Pay attention to the water you use. This gal doesn’t like tap water. Opt for either distilled or filtered water left out overnight. • Watering can be tricky. I have nicknamed her Goldilocks because too much? Uh oh. Too little? Uh oh. No Goldi here has to have it jussst right. What is right? Moist soil. So get a water meter and measure before watering. Wait until the meter reads the high end of dry/low end of moist. • Provide bright but indirect light for her. • Fertilize during spring/summer using a mix of plnts fertilizer and seaweed fertilizer, which she seems to enjoy. • To keep spider mites away, mist her once a day with distilled water. I personally recommend not repotting her until she’s acclimated to the new environment for several weeks. Once she’s ready, I’ll be transplanting her into lechuza pon and setting up a semi-hydro setup, as I’ve heard good things about Calatheas in this arrangement. If possible, I’ll come back to amend my review and let you know how it goes.
