(Butterfly Bush) Pink Delight

Pink Delight is a butterfly bush with long, tapering panicles of warm pink flowers, each one up to 30 cm and clearly scented on a sunny afternoon. The arching stems carry narrow grey green leaves with a felted white underside, which keeps the shrub looking soft even out of flower. Left unpruned it reaches around 200-250 cm in height and 150-200 cm in width, so give it a solitary spot at 1 plant per m2 or a large tub. It flowers from July into September and is one of the best shrubs you can plant for butterflies and bees. Use it at the back of a border, along a boundary, or as a screen beside the place where you sit outside in summer.

Full sun gives the most flower spikes and the strongest scent, so avoid a shaded corner. It is not fussy about soil and even copes with poor, stony ground, but it will not tolerate waterlogging, so improve heavy clay before planting. Water it through its first summer and during long droughts, and note that a specimen in a pot needs watering far more often than one in the border. Prune hard every year in March, taking all stems back to about 30-50 cm, because the flowers appear on new wood and an unpruned bush becomes bare and floppy. It is hardy in the garden, and the occasional frost damaged shoot tip is simply removed at that spring pruning.
