(Cast iron plant) Elatior

Glossy, deep green leaves rise straight from the soil, each on its own slender stalk and ending in a soft, pointed tip. At around 70 cm, it fills an empty corner with a lush, leafy fountain. Picture it beside your sofa or in a hallway where the light is a bit shy, because that's exactly where this green friend feels at home. There's a reason it's known as the cast iron plant: it shrugs off dim spots and the odd forgotten watering. It's also non-toxic to cats and dogs, so it can stay put when curious paws come by. Pop it in your urban jungle and it'll quietly do its thing for years, growing slowly and keeping its good looks.

Give it a spot in light shade or bright, indirect light, and keep it out of direct sun, which scorches those glossy leaves. Let the top few centimetres of soil dry out before you water, roughly every week or two, because its thick rhizome stores water and doesn't like soggy feet. Room temperature suits it well, anywhere between 12 and 27 °C, and it's happy with normal household humidity. A wipe over the leaves with a damp cloth now and then keeps them glossy and helps them catch what little light there is. Feed it about once a month in spring and summer, and repot only every three years or so, since it likes being a little snug in its pot. Brown leaf tips usually mean the soil stayed too wet or too dry for a while, so don't worry, just ease back into a steady rhythm.
