(Aloe vera) Vera

Thick, fleshy leaves in soft grey-green, finished with tiny teeth along the edges: that's the look of an Aloe Vera at its best. At 70 cm tall in a 24 cm pot, this green friend already has real presence, so picture it on a bright windowsill or beside the sofa where the light pours in. Inside each leaf is a gel that stores water, which is how it shrugs off a busy week of forgotten watering. Over time it sends up new pups around the base, and suddenly one plant has turned into a little family. Give it a sunny spot and it'll quietly keep you company for years.

Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally by a south or west facing window, because those thick leaves are built for plenty of light. Let the soil dry out completely before you water again, roughly every two weeks, then water generously and let any excess drain away. The leaves store water, so a little thirst is fine, while soggy roots are what it really dislikes. It's happy at normal room temperature and doesn't need extra humidity, but keep it above 10°C and away from cold windowpanes in winter. Plant it in a free-draining cactus or succulent mix, and repot into a slightly bigger pot about every two years, when the pups start crowding the base. Feed it a little cactus fertiliser in spring and summer and let it rest in winter. Keep in mind that it's mildly toxic to pets, so place it out of reach of curious paws.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
