The speckles are what set this one apart, because every glossy leaf is flecked with cream and soft pink across a deep green base, as if someone dusted it with confetti. The stems trail long and heavy, so in a hanging pot Pink Polka becomes a proper waterfall of patterned leaves. When it flowers you get the classic lipstick blooms, tubular red flowers pushing out of dark maroon calyxes like a lipstick from its case. It is a little more demanding than a plain Aeschynanthus, mostly because the variegation needs decent light to stay strong. A real showpiece green friend for a bright, humid spot.
Give your lipstick plant plenty of bright indirect light, because low light makes the pink and cream speckles fade back to green. Water every other week and let the top few centimetres dry out first, this one hates sitting wet far more than it minds being slightly dry. It appreciates humidity, so a bathroom or a kitchen with morning light brings out the best growth and the most flowers. Use an airy mix with bark and perlite that drains fast, and repot every two years without going up too much in pot size. Feed monthly through spring and summer to encourage flowering, then ease off in autumn. Leaves dropping suddenly usually means a cold draught or a sharp temperature swing rather than a watering problem.
