Glossy, waxy leaves on trailing stems, and at the tips tubular flowers in fiery red that look like lipsticks peeking out of their cases. Picture it hanging by a bright window, with the stems spilling over the edge of the pot and the flowers catching your eye every time you walk past. In the rainforests of Southeast Asia, Aeschynanthus grows on tree branches, so dangling freely is exactly what it likes best. That makes it a green friend that brings colour at eye level and turns an empty corner into the liveliest spot in your urban jungle. Pick a hook, hang it up and let it do the dangling.
A bright spot suits this green friend best, as long as the midday sun doesn't hit the leaves directly, because that can leave brown, scorched patches. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly once a week, and let the excess drain away. In the wild it sits up in the trees, so soggy roots are the one thing it won't forgive. It likes it warm, between 15 and 27 °C, and enjoys some humidity, so a light bathroom or a gentle misting now and then keeps the leaves glossy, but keep it out of draughts. Use an airy, free-draining mix with a bit of bark or perlite, and repot every two years in spring into a pot that is only slightly bigger, as it flowers happily when snug. Feed with diluted plant food every few weeks in spring and summer, and let it rest in winter. Good news for the pet owners in our community: it is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
