There's a reason people call it the desert rose: those trumpet-shaped flowers, from soft pink to deep red, are what this succulent is famous for. This little one has glossy, leathery leaves and a swollen, bottle-shaped base (the caudex) that stores water, just like it does on the dry hillsides of Africa and Arabia. Picture it on your sunniest windowsill, getting sturdier and more sculptural with every year. A bit of patience and plenty of light will coax out the first flowers in time. Give this green friend a bright spot and it will turn an ordinary windowsill into a tiny desert garden in your urban jungle.
Give it your brightest spot, ideally a south-facing window with a few hours of direct sun, because that's what it knows from the wild and what sets the flowers off. Water it well, then let the soil dry out almost completely before you water again, since the swollen base stores moisture and soggy roots are what it likes least. In spring and summer that's roughly every other week, and in winter you can ease off to a splash now and then. It loves warmth, so keep it above 12°C and away from cold draughts. If the leaves yellow and drop in winter, don't worry, it's just taking a rest. Plant it in airy, well-draining cactus or succulent soil and repot every two years into a pot that's only slightly bigger. Feed it diluted succulent fertiliser in spring and summer only. The milky sap is toxic, so keep it away from curious pets and little hands, and wash your hands after pruning.
