The Acer palmatum Shaina on a stem is a compact Japanese maple with a neat, rounded crown of deep red, finely cut leaves that turn fiery orange-red in autumn. It reaches about 150 cm in height and 100-150 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per square meter in a spacious border or in a large pot to show off its elegant shape. As a standard tree it is a lovely eye-catcher for a patio, balcony or front garden. Seasonal changes affect the colour of the leaves, and in winter the plant is bare.

Plant the Acer in a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered position, ideally out of the harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. It prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in a pot, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune only lightly in late autumn or winter to keep the crown balanced and remove dead twigs. The plant is fully hardy, but in a pot it is wise to protect the roots from deep frost.
