(Japanese Maple) Palmatum Festival

The Acer Palmatum Festival is a Japanese maple with finely cut, elegant leaves and a graceful, airy habit. It reaches about 300 cm in height and 200-250 cm in width at maturity, growing slowly into a beautiful specimen. Give it room as a solitary plant: 1 per 4 square meters is plenty, or 1 in a large container. The foliage puts on a show in spring and again in autumn, when the leaves change colour. It is perfect as a focal point in a border, in a Japanese-style garden or on a spacious patio.

Plant the Acer in partial shade, sheltered from strong wind and hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist, and it dislikes waterlogging. Water regularly in dry spells, especially in the first years and when grown in a pot, as containers dry out much faster. Prune as little as possible and only in late summer or autumn, removing dead or crossing branches. This maple is fully hardy; in a pot, protect the roots from deep frost with a wrap or a sheltered spot.
