The Acer Black Lace is a Japanese maple with deep burgundy to purple leaves that are cut into fine, lace-like threads. It forms an elegant, softly cascading mound that reaches about 150 cm in height and 120-150 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per square meter, as it needs room to spread. In autumn the foliage turns a glowing red, which makes it a beautiful focal point in a border, a gravel garden or a large container on the patio.

Plant the Acer in a spot with partial shade or morning sun, sheltered from strong wind and hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. It prefers slightly acidic, humus-rich and well-draining soil. Water regularly in dry spells and keep the soil evenly moist, especially when grown in a pot, as containers dry out much faster. Pruning is rarely needed: just remove dead or crossing branches in late summer or winter, never in spring when the sap is rising. The plant is fully hardy, but in a pot it helps to wrap the container or move it to a sheltered spot during hard frost.
