The Wisteria Rosea is a vigorous, deciduous climber that drips with long, fragrant clusters of soft pink flowers in late spring. It can reach about 10 m in height with a spread of several metres once it is trained on a sturdy wall, pergola or frame. Plant one per 3-4 metres of wall or pergola, because it fills its support quickly. Bees love the blooms, and the fresh green, feathery foliage keeps the plant attractive well into autumn. Young plants may need a few years to settle before they flower fully, and please note that all parts of wisteria, especially the seed pods, are toxic if eaten.
Plant the Wisteria in a sunny, sheltered position for the best flowering. It prefers fertile, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist, and it does not like standing water. Water regularly in dry spells, especially in the first years and when grown in a container, as pots dry out much faster. Prune twice a year: shorten the long new shoots in July or August, and cut them back again to 2-3 buds in February to encourage abundant flowers. This plant is fully hardy and does not need winter protection in the ground; in a pot, shelter the roots from hard frost.
